First Edition Pokemon Cards
The 1st Edition stamp is the holy grail of Pokemon collecting. These cards from the earliest print runs command enormous premiums and define the vintage market.
What Are They?
First Edition Pokemon cards are cards from the very first print run of a given set, identified by a small "1st Edition" stamp on the left side of the card below the illustration. The Pokemon Company printed First Edition runs for sets from Base Set through Neo Destiny (1999-2002). Once the initial print run sold out, subsequent printings were "Unlimited" editions without the stamp. First Edition cards are the scarcest versions of any given card and are considered the most collectible and valuable variant by the community.
How to Identify
Look for the "1st Edition" text stamp located on the left-center of the card, between the card art and the text box. The stamp shows "Edition" in small text below a circled "1". On English Base Set cards, also check whether the card is Shadowless (no drop shadow on the right side of the illustration border), as First Edition Base Set cards are always Shadowless. For non-English cards, the stamp may read "1. Edition" (German) or "1ere Edition" (French). The stamp is subtle but should be clearly legible under normal lighting.
Value Factors
The premium for First Edition cards varies dramatically by set and card. Base Set First Edition holos are the crown jewels, with Charizard reaching six figures in PSA 10. Even common First Edition Base Set cards sell for $10-50 depending on condition. Neo-era First Edition cards carry smaller premiums but are still worth multiples of their Unlimited counterparts. Condition is paramount since most First Edition cards are over 20 years old. Centering issues are common in early print runs, making well-centered copies especially valuable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 How do I know if my Pokemon card is First Edition?
Look for the "1st Edition" stamp on the left side of the card, positioned between the artwork and the text box. It features a circled "1" with "Edition" printed below. If there is no stamp, the card is an Unlimited printing.
Q2 Which First Edition Pokemon cards are worth the most?
The most valuable are Base Set First Edition holographic cards: Charizard ($50,000-420,000 depending on grade), Blastoise ($5,000-60,000), and Venusaur ($4,000-30,000). Even a complete First Edition Base Set of commons and uncommons in near-mint condition is worth $2,000-5,000.
Q3 Were all Pokemon sets printed in First Edition?
No. First Edition print runs were only produced for sets from Base Set through Neo Destiny (1999-2002). Starting with the Expedition Base Set in 2002, The Pokemon Company stopped producing First Edition runs for English sets.
Q4 Is a First Edition card always more valuable than Unlimited?
Yes, a First Edition card is always worth more than the same card in Unlimited printing, all else being equal. The premium ranges from 2-3x for common cards to 10-50x or more for rare holographic cards, depending on the set and demand.
