What Are They?

Promo Pokemon cards are promotional cards distributed outside of standard booster packs. They come from a wide variety of sources: special product bundles (Elite Trainer Boxes, Collection Boxes), tournament prizes, movie events, retail promotions (McDonalds, Build-A-Bear), magazine inserts, and digital code redemptions. Promos are identified by a black star promo stamp and a unique numbering system separate from regular sets. The promo card pool spans the entire history of the Pokemon TCG, from the original Wizards of the Coast black star promos to modern SWSH and SV promo series containing hundreds of cards.

How to Identify

Promo cards feature a black star symbol where the set symbol would normally appear, along with a promo-specific card number. Modern promos use numbering like SWSH001, SVP 001, etc. Older promos from the WOTC era are numbered simply as #1, #2, etc. Many promos have a stamp or text indicating their distribution source (e.g., "Staff", "Prerelease", "Build-A-Bear"). Some promos use the same artwork as set cards but with an added promo stamp, while others have entirely unique artwork not available in any set.

Value Factors

Promo values span an enormous range. Common product promos sell for $1-5, while rare event-exclusive promos can reach hundreds or thousands. Staff promos from Prerelease events are worth significantly more than player versions. Promos with unique artwork not found elsewhere tend to hold value better. The most valuable promos include Trophy cards from official tournaments, Illustrator Pikachu (the most expensive Pokemon card ever), and early WOTC era promos in high grades. Modern promos from popular products like the Ultra Premium Collections often hold $10-50 value.
